Giving & Receiving Feedback Constructively

Giving & Receiving Feedback Constructively

Hi everyone, and welcome back to another daily English lesson! Today, we’ll focus on the importance of giving and receiving feedback constructively in a business setting.

Giving Constructive Feedback:

Giving constructive feedback is a valuable skill. Here are some tips:

  • Be specific: Instead of saying “Your presentation was boring,” say “I found the presentation a bit slow-paced in the beginning. Perhaps incorporating a more engaging opening would capture the audience’s attention.”
  • Focus on behaviour, not personality: Comment on the actions or the work, not the person. For example, instead of saying “You’re not a good team player,” say “I noticed that you didn’t participate much in the group discussion today.”
  • Be balanced: Offer both positive and negative feedback. Start with something positive to build rapport and then offer constructive criticism.
  • Use “I” statements: For example, “I felt that…” or “I noticed that…” This helps to avoid sounding accusatory.
  • Be clear and concise: Get to the point and avoid rambling.
  • Offer solutions or suggestions for improvement.

Receiving Feedback Constructively:

  • Listen actively: Pay close attention to the feedback and try to understand the other person’s perspective.
  • Ask clarifying questions: If you’re unsure about something, don’t hesitate to ask for clarification.
  • Avoid getting defensive: Try to remain calm and receptive to the feedback.
  • Thank the person for their feedback.
  • Focus on how you can improve: Use the feedback as an opportunity for growth and development.

Constructive feedback is a valuable tool for personal and professional development.
