(Increase, Decrease, Fluctuate)
Hi everyone, and welcome back to another daily English lesson! Today, we’re going to focus on describing trends and data, which is essential for effective business communication.
Describing Trends:
Let’s start with some key verbs to describe trends:
- Increase:“Sales have increased significantly over the past quarter.
- Decrease:Â “Profits have decreased slightly compared to last year.”
- Rise:Â “The company’s stock price has risen steadily in recent months.”
- Fall:Â “Customer satisfaction has fallen slightly due to recent service issues.”
- Grow:Â “The company has grown rapidly in the past five years.”
- Decline:Â “Demand for our product has declined in recent years.”
- Fluctuate:Â “Stock prices can fluctuate significantly depending on market conditions.”
- Stabilize:Â “After a period of decline, sales have stabilized.”
- Peak:Â “Sales peaked during the holiday season.”

Modifying Verbs:
To add more nuance to your descriptions, you can use adverbs to modify these verbs:
- Significantly:Â “Sales have significantly increased.”
- Slightly:Â “Profits have slightly decreased.”
- Rapidly:Â “The company has grown rapidly.”
- Gradually:Â “Sales have gradually increased over the past year.”
- Sharply:Â “Sales have sharply declined in the last quarter.”
By using a variety of verbs and adverbs, you can accurately and effectively describe trends in data.
Practice using these words in your own sentences to improve your fluency. For example, “The company’s market share has gradually increased over the past two years.”
